Discussion 1 – Advent and Christmas

June 9, 2025 | 11:30am PDT

Welcome! Barbara Brown Taylor is one of my favorite preachers. I find her inspiring, faith-filled, down-to-earth, and refreshingly real. She is a great speaker and storyteller, and this will be my first time reading one of her books, so I’m excited to discover it alongside you!

Each week I will post some guidelines or questions to consider for each section’s reading, and may offer some suggestions for viewing, listening, or contemplation. We will meet on Mondays at 11:30am for 60-90 minutes, using the same Zoom information each week.

A note on reading this book…

I invite you to read through Taylor’s book one sermon/story at a time – ideally reading one or two a day, rather than all in one or two sittings. Sit with what you’ve read, maybe meditate or pray on a phrase or concept that sticks with you, look at the study prompts ahead of time, and be present with it as much as time and circumstance allow.

I always recommend having a highlighter, pen, or pencil to mark in the book (if you have a print copy) and/or set aside a notebook or journal to capture your thoughts on the reading and prompts for discussion with the group.

Other Discussions

Each week I will post our discussion video after we meet, so that those who were unable to join us – or want to listen through it again at leisure – may do so.

Read

Before our first meeting, please read the Advent and Christmas sermons (pp. 3-26)

Bring

Take note of any particular concept or phrase that catches you. Write it down and meditate, pray, or reread it and sit with it. We’ll have time to discuss these in small groups and together.
