This week’s reading focuses on two paradigms for Christian practice and the connection between heart and faith. Please consider the below questions as a guide in your reading; these will be discussion points for your breakout circles on Monday.
- Dr. Borg posits an “earlier paradigm” understanding of a lived Christianity with (1) a focus on understanding faith as belief, (2) an emphasis on guilt, sin and forgiveness; and (3) the importance and expectation of an after-life and salvation. Is this how you understand or once understood the Christian life? How/has that understanding shifted?
- What do you think Borg means when he says that in the “emerging paradigm,” the Christian life is seen as “relational” and “transformative,” and that transformation is at the center of the Christian life?
- Dr. Borg has said, “Faith ultimately has to do with our relationship with God, not with a set of beliefs.” How does this statement sit with you?
